Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Commerce, Dr. Majed Al-Qasabi, has issued a landmark decision prohibiting the commercial use of national, religious, and sectarian symbols and logos. The move aims to prevent misuse or exploitation of these symbols in commercial transactions.
Legal Framework and Implementation
Under the new regulation, violators will face penalties in line with municipal punitive laws. Businesses have been given a 90-day grace period from the decision’s publication in the official gazette to comply. Legal actions against non-compliant entities will commence after this period.
Previous Ban on Saudi Flag Use
This decision follows a prior ministry directive banning the use of Saudi Arabia’s flag—featuring the name of God and state emblem—in commercial contexts, including goods, printed materials, and promotional gifts. The restriction extends to images of Saudi leadership and officials, aiming to preserve the sanctity and respect of these national symbols.
The ministry emphasizes that the regulation seeks to uphold national dignity and respect for cultural and religious icons, ensuring they are not exploited for profit.
